Osprey are considered endangered in the state of Illinois. They are fighting their way back, though, with a little help from friends. They have been seen building their nests in cell phone towers as well on open nest boxes that were made for them and placed on the top of utility poles. This is giving state bird watchers and animal lovers hope for their future in Illinois.
Their numbers are growing again and even have the Illinois Endangered Species Protection Board favoring changing their status to threatened in the state. The United States Geological Survey defines endangered as “species is in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant portion of its range (in this case, the state).” Threatened, however, they define as “likely to become endangered within the foreseeable future.” Maybe it is a small difference but it is a positive one that is encouraging for the majestic birds.
