Volunteers stepping up to adopt animals rescued from neglect

Good News Notes:

More than one-third of the 54 cats and dogs brought to the Animal Protective League in Springfield because of two incidents of animal neglect have been either adopted on pre-adopted.

Another one-third or so could be finding their way out of the shelter between Monday and Tuesday, said Ian Wick, APL’s adoption center manager.

News of APL’s plight spurred about 72 applications since Friday, ‘an overwhelming response,’ Wick said.

‘The community loves to support things like this and that’s what brings me a lot of hope, too,’ Wick added. ‘You sound the call and people will answer. They just need to know that you need the help.

‘It’s an awesome thing when that happens.’

On Wednesday, 30 Chihuahuas were rescued from southern Illinois. The other animals were brought in as a result of a breeder being shut down near Quincy in Adams County by the Illinois Department of Agriculture the prior week.

APL prioritizes sick and injured animals locally, so taking in that volume of neglected animals was out of the ordinary, Wick said.

Before the start of Monday, Wick said 19 cats and dogs had been adopted or pre-adopted. Pre-adoption allows someone to foster the animal they intend to adopt until they can get the animal spayed or neutered at APL’s clinic, he said.

As many as 20 cats and dogs could also be adopted or pre-adopted by Tuesday, Wick added.

Fifteen of the other animals are being fostered because of medical or behavioral reasons, though none of the situations are serious, he said. Those animals will all be available for adoption once the veterinarians give the approval.”
