“She’s been on soap operas and one of the most successful sitcoms of all time.
Now Tatyana Ali is stepping up to help a local organization that helps expectant mothers and the midwives who help them deliver.
Ali played for a local cause during a recent celebrity edition of Wheel of Fortune.
Ali, an actress and singer best known for her role as Ashley Banks on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, solved the Celebrity Wheel of Fortune puzzle recently.
“I have to tell you, I just felt like I was in the zone,” Ali said.
It was a more than $100,000 win for the nonprofit, Commonsense Childbirth Institute.
The Birth Place, a clinic in Winter Garden, is aimed at improving outcomes and saving lives.
“This enables us to continue where we have to triage, and we do not say no. Everybody gets an appointment no matter their circumstances, whether they’re insured, uninsured underinsured, undocumented,” Commonsense Childbirth’s Jennie Joseph said.
Ali says after having a traumatic birth in the hospital with her first child, she chose a midwife for her second.
“My second experience with my midwife, oh my gosh, it healed us,” Ali said.
Joseph says the winnings will also help with her school, the first and only blacked-owned accredited private midwifery school in the U.S.
Right now, she has 25 students who in the future will deliver babies at home in a birthing center or clinics like hers.
“Where they really reach communities that have the most need and change these horrible outcomes we have in the United States as far as maternal death, maternal morbidity and infant death,” Joseph said.
Ali chose a local organization because she wants folks to hear about all the work midwives do….”
