12-year-old honoed by Herrin FD for heroic act

Good News Notes:

A Herrin 12-year-old was honored Monday evening at the Herrin City Council meeting for a heroic act derived from skills he learned as a third grader.

Herrin Fire Chief Shawn Priddy presented Jacobie Stubbs with a certificate recognizing his quick thinking and response to a fire in Stubbs’ home.

On Oct. 20, the Herrin Fire Department responded to an oven fire that was getting out of control

When the crews arrived, they found the fire had been extinguished and contained to the oven by Stubbs, who told firefighters he learned to use an extinguisher in the third grade when he took part in the S.A.F.E. program.

Priddy said his department has taught the “Students and Firefighters in Education” program for well over 20 years.”
